ADVICE FROM DIYARBAKIR LEBIB TO HIS GRANDSON MUHAMMED EMIN

Abstract

One of the goals of nations is to prepare their children for the future as well-informed and cultured individuals with moral values. Poets/authors, who serve as society's intellectuals, produce a variety of works with the goal of instilling moral and social values in children and the rest of society. The goal of these works is to create a better society. Turks have produced literary works in the form of nasihatnames, which provide guidance on a variety of topics such as politics, state administration, religion, mysticism, and so on, since ancient times. In the centuries that followed, the number of such works in our literature grew.

Pend-nâme is a Persian word that combines the words pend and name to mean advice. Pend-nâme by the eminent Iranian poet Ferîdüddîn-i Attar influenced a large number of Turkish poets, who translated and interpreted this work in vast quantities. The phrase "Pend-nâme" appears in the title of Lebîb of Diyarbakır's poem to his grandson Muhammed Emîn, which is the subject of the present study. This poem, however, is original and not a translation or adaptation of Ferîdüddîn-i Attâr's Pend-nâme.

Lebîb, the author of the nasihatname discussed in the present study, is an 18th-century poet. The poet, who was born in Diyarbakır and spent a long time of his life there, is referred to as Lebîb-i Âmidî and the Dark Preacher in various sources. Lebîb, who was blind, died in 1182/1768-69 at the age of about 75. In his Divan, evidence of social events from his time can be found. In the present study, The poem titled "Pend-Nâme-i İtâ'at Lüzûm-ı Nebîre-i Hod Eş-Şehir Be-Mehemmed Emîn", which appears in the 39th stanza of Lebîb's Divan, was examined in the present study. The poet's advice to his grandson was categorized as "Science", "Calligraphy", "Respect and Dignity", "Religious and Moral Issues", "Speaking Etiquette", and "Social Behaviour". The purpose of the present study is to contribute to future research on the nasihatname genre.
